O problema do mal constitui uma das principais objeções à existência do Deus teísta. Neste artigo discutem-se as duas versões principais do problema do mal: a versão lógica e a versão evidencial. Por um lado, na versão lógica procura-se derivar uma inconsistência ou contradição lógica entre o mal e o Deus teísta; assim, se há mal no mundo, Deus não existe. Por outro lado, na versão evidencial parte-se da existência de males gratuitos como forte evidência ou razão contra a existência do Deus teísta. Como resposta a estes problemas serão analisadas várias teorias contemporâneas, como a defesa do livre-arbítrio, o teísmo cético, a teodiceia da edificação da alma e da “Felix Culpa”, e o compatibilismo entre Deus e os males gratuitos.

The problem of evil is one of the main objections to the existence of the theistic God. This paper discusses the two main versions of the problem of evil: the logical version and the evidential version. On the one hand, the logical version aims to derive an inconsistency or logical contradiction between evil and theistic God; thus, if there is evil in the world, God does not exist. On the other hand, the evidential version aims to show that the existence of gratuitous evils is strong evidence or reason against the existence of the theistic God. In response to these problems, several contemporary theories will be analyzed, such as the free will defense, the skeptical theism response, the soul-making and “Felix Culpa” theodicies, and the compatibilism between God and gratuitous evils.
